Sand cats measure 15 to 20 inches (39 to 52 cm) in body length and weigh only 3 to 7 pounds (1.3 to 3.2 kg) — smaller than most pet cats. Their coat is pale sandy or grayish, with faint stripes on the legs and rings on the tail for camouflage.
The most distinctive feature is the thick fur covering the soles of the feet. These fur "snowshoes" insulate against burning sand, muffle footsteps, and improve traction on loose dunes. Large, wide-set ears detect prey scratching underground.
Sand cats have a broad, flattened head and a slightly enlarged auditory bulla (ear chamber) that enhances hearing for subterranean rodents. Their kidneys concentrate urine efficiently, minimizing water loss.
