Koalas are strictly endemic to Australia, inhabiting the states of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia.
Their habitat is exclusively dictated by the presence of specific food trees. Thus, their primary biomes include:
- Eucalyptus Forests and Woodlands: From coastal islands and tall eucalypt forests to inland woodlands extending into semi-arid regions.
- Riparian Zones: They often prefer habitats adjacent to watercourses where soil moisture sustains higher-quality foliage.
Despite there being over 700 species of eucalyptus in Australia, koalas are incredibly fussy eaters, relying heavily on fewer than 50 species, and having strong regional preferences for just a handful of primary browse trees.
