Overview

The jaguar, Panthera onca, lives in the Americas; the leopard, Panthera pardus, lives in Africa and Asia. That geographic split is the quickest answer in the wild. A spotted big cat in the Amazon is a jaguar, while one in an African savanna or South Asian forest is a leopard.

Both species have rosettes rather than the solid spots of a cheetah. Jaguar rosettes are typically larger and often contain one or more small dark spots inside the ring. Leopard rosettes are usually smaller and more densely packed, with a more open center. Coat patterns vary between individuals, so use the body as a second check.

Jaguars are compact, deep-chested, and strongly built through the head and jaw. Leopards are also powerful climbers and ambush hunters, but generally look lighter and more elongated. Neither should be identified by size alone because sex, age, distance, and local prey conditions all affect appearance.

Size

Jaguars run about 3.8–6 feet long and 100–250 pounds. Leopards run about 3.5–6.2 feet and 66–176 pounds. The ranges overlap in length, but jaguars reach the higher maximum mass and carry it in a compact, muscular frame.

Both mothers raise cubs alone after mating. Solitary does not mean unsocial in every circumstance; it means adult cats generally do not travel in stable mixed groups like lions.

Diet

Leopards occupy a wider continental range across Africa and Asia, using forest, woodland, scrub, rocky areas, and savanna. Their adaptability does not remove their dependence on prey and safe cover; local leopard populations can still decline sharply under habitat loss and persecution.
